Participating Countries

Participation in the APRM is open to all member states of the African Union and so far twenty nine countries have acceded by signing the Memorandum of Understanding. These are: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome & Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia.

Central Africa

The geographic Central African region is focussed on the Congo River Basin to the west of Eastern Africa and includes countries that are members of the RECs of COMESA, CEN-SAD, ECCAS and SADC.

Regional Countries:

Eastern Africa

Eastern Africa geographically centres on the members of the EAC but also includes all member countries from IGAD and some from COMESA, ECCAS, and Seychelles.

Northern Africa

The geographic region of Northern Africa in an AU context includes almost all of the AMU but members from the geographic region are also in CEN-SAD and COMESA.

Southern Africa

The geographical delineation of Southern Africa does not include such countries as the DRC or Tanzania that form part of the REC chiefly responsible for the Southern African region, SADC, nor does it include countries in Central, East and North Africa as does COMESA the other REC focussed largely on Southern African. The Indian Ocean Islands are excluded. It is inclusive of all the members of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) that is not a REC for APRM purposes.

Western Africa

Western Africa geographically comprises the largest number of countries and has ECOWAS and CEN-SAD as key REC constituents but there is also membership of AMU.
